Furnishing the new BKUS premises: ergonomics and aesthetics for a modern healthcare environment

Children’s Clinical University Hospital (BKUS) in Riga is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. Latvia’s leading pediatric hospital is marking this milestone in new, modern premises designed specifically for its needs.

THOMSON Furniture was proud to be part of this large-scale project. We supplied high-quality furniture solutions that combine excellent ergonomics, durability and a warm, welcoming look.

Layout and design: bringing medical standards and well-being together

Modern healthcare design is no longer limited to sterile functionality. The BKUS concept is built around a child-friendly, reassuring and safe environment that helps reduce stress for patients and their families during visits.

The visual story created by architecture firm SIA “Mark arhitekti“ and design studio SIA “H2E“ focuses on warm color palettes and organic shapes. Furniture from the European brands we represent fit naturally into this concept, offering both excellent practicality and a cozy look.

Ergonomics and efficiency for medical staff

The daily routine of medical staff is fast-paced and physically demanding. To make their work easier and help them work more efficiently, we paid special attention to ergonomics throughout the project.

• High-quality task chairs: Provide optimal support during long hours of work.

• Adjustable workspace solutions: Help staff stay focused and reduce fatigue.

• Durable materials: The furniture is built for heavy use and meets strict hygiene requirements.

Well-chosen office furniture and an ergonomic workstation setup are a direct investment in employee health and well-being.

Functional shared spaces and acoustic comfort

The hospital’s shared spaces and waiting areas have been turned into pleasant, homey “living rooms”. The furniture here creates a safe and easily accessible environment.

Thanks to careful zoning and high-quality upholstered furniture, the spaces have better acoustics and a sense of privacy. The design furniture chosen for these areas is easy to clean, durable and safe for children, while still looking refined and attractive.

Premium brands featured in the project

To deliver the best possible solutions, we brought in Europe’s leading furniture manufacturers:

Narbutas: Functional, modern office furniture solutions.
Bejot: Acoustic and upholstered furniture for greater comfort in public areas.
Interstuhl : German-quality ergonomic task chairs for the comfort of medical staff.
SCAB design: Attractive, durable and easy-to-clean design furniture.
